$900,000 sought for health research centre
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – Member governments of the East African Community have asked the East African Legislative Assembly to put aside $924,067 in the 2014/15 budget for setting up the East African Health Research Commission.
It is to be located in Burundi. During the 10th ordinary meeting of the sectoral Council of Ministers in Arusha last week, talks surrounded the recruitment of core personnel. This follows a consensus adopted by the 9th meeting.
This is contained in the Background Paper endorsed by James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary for Health of Kenya and Chairperson of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers of Health and Dan Hartman, Director of Integrated Development (Global Health), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USA.
The Sectoral Committee considered the draft job descriptions and the proposed qualifications for each of the seven priority posts for the EAC Health Research Commission as presented by the EAC Secretariat.
Similarly consideration of the Report on Ratification of the Protocol on the Establishment of the ‘East African Community Health Research Commission (EACHRC)’ by the United Republic of Tanzania and Preparations for the Operationalization of the Commission was taken into account.
The 19th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Committee on Health meeting noted that the Protocol on the establishment of the EAC Health Research Commission (EACHRC) was ratified by Uganda and Kenya on October 29, 2009 and September 9, 2010 respectively.Continue
