President Jakaya Kikwete has described the Uhuru Torch as part of the legacy of Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who initiated its use as a symbol of unity, strength, peace and hope for Tanzanians.

The president made the remarks yesterday in Tabora, where he also reassured the nation that details of next year’s referendum for the proposed Constitution will be made public as soon as the preparations are completed.

Addressing multitudes gathered for yesterday’s 15th anniversary of the death of the founding father of the nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere which coincided with the climax of the Uhuru Torch Race, the president said details on the referendum will be made public soon.

“The preparations of referendum of the proposed constitution are on going and official information will be made public once processes are completed,”   said the President.

He praised the proposed Constitution as one that recognises rights and interests of all groups including fishermen, farmers, livestock keepers and youth.

“For a long time youth in the country have been complaining of not being constitutionally recognised now the proposed draft has recommended the formation of a youth council which will provide a platform for youth to meet and discuss issues related to their development,” the President noted.

President Kikwete went on to urge youth in the country to abstain from being used by politicians and activists with ‘negative perceptions on the country’s development.’

President Kikwete also called on the youth to contest for various leadership positions in the coming local government elections as a means to getting involved in decision making processes from the grassroots.

He said Tanzanians should mark the 15th anniversary of Mwalimu Nyerere by reflecting on the best way to honour his legacy. continue
