LAKE ZONE: Over 950 children forced to marry


TARIME.More than 950 children were forced to early marriage in Tarime District, Mara Region between January last year and June this year, The Citizen has learnt.
Speaking at the launching of the campaign against child marriage in the district yesterday, acting Tarime District executive director Nyanja Maka, said child abuse in his district was worsening. He called for stern measures to curb the problem.
                            
“Apart from early marriage, also children under 18 years experience a lot of challenges such as female genital mutilation (FGM),” said the actiging DED.
He further stated that more than 1,620 girls were forced to undergo FGM within the period and that more than 4,130 girls were impregnated.
                              
Dr Maka said also 11 girls were raped in the same period, noting that the worsening state of protection of child rights in the district has affected girls psychologically, economically and socially.
He added that apart from traditions and customs, girls abuse in the district was caused by poverty and ignorance.
In his remarks, the director for Children’s Dignity Forum (Cdf), Mr Koshuma Mtengeti, said his NGO has embarked on a campaign to protect children in the district.
