Tanzania: Accident Claims the Life of Factory Worker

Arusha — A WORKER with the A-to-Z Textiles Mills in Arusha, Mr Erick Mathayo was killed when a heavy metal dropped on his head at the factory's premises.
The late Mr Mathayo is reported to have been going through the final shipping consignment in the Sterlinger Department in Kisongo area on Monday, when a very heavy object fell onto his head early in the morning.
The Director of Production at A-to-Z, Mr Binesh Haria confirmed the incident but added that contrary to early reports that the deceased died in the factory, he died at Mount Meru Hospital where he was rushed for treatment.

There have been no arrests so far, but the police in Arusha region have confirmed to be investigating the incident which A-to-Z workers allege to be murder but the factory management insists it was an accident.
Some workers in the giant textile mill, famous for "Olyset" mosquito repelling bed-nets expressed concern that this was the third unexplained death to occur in the Kisongo factory this year but the management continues to allay fears.
An official from Occupational Safety Health Organization (OSHA), Mr Ramadhan Msimbira admitted that the working condition at the mill is appalling and that his office had always cautioned the factory management regarding the issue but it seems their appeals kept on falling on deaf ears.
Only a few weeks ago, another worker was allegedly killed at the factory and his body thrown into a well. The late Mr Elias Sixmond Nditi, the 22-year-old former member of staff at the A-to-Z Textiles Mills and who until his mysterious death, was working at the Factory's Kisongo plant and died in questionable circumstances.
Previously a decomposing body of another employee was discovered amidst consignment of packed nets inside the factory warehouse. A-to-Z manufactures the Olyset Mosquito nets under the special Malaria Control programme for Africa.
The factory management said they have already filed all relevant information surrounding Monday's incident with the police
